Jacksonville Zoo

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, situated on the scenic Trout River, is hands down the one of the best things to do in Jacksonville, FL with toddlers. Sprawling across 117 acres, this expansive zoo is home to over 2,000 animals representing more than 350 species. It is one of the largest and most diverse zoos in the Southeastern United States. Open every day of the year, except for Christmas and Thanksgiving, the Jacksonville Zoo is easy to fit into any travel schedule. The zoo’s well-designed exhibits mimic the natural habitats of the animals, providing an immersive experience for guests. Beyond the captivating animal encounters, the Jacksonville Zoo also features educational programs, interactive exhibits, and conservation initiatives, It is a perfect destination for families looking to connect with the wonders of the animal kingdom. Specifically designed with toddlers in mind, Splash Cove will keep toddlers cool on even the hottest of Florida days.

Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling 12-acre rescue facility, that allows children to get close to endangered big cats while learning about wildlife conservation. I also love it because it has staffed lifeguard towers, and clean bathrooms. There are also showers for cleaning off sandy little bodies before they get in the car! While there is a sizeable parking lot it fills up early. I recommend you plan on getting to the beach before 10am or later in the day around 3-4pm when most families are heading home.

Jacksonville Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Our favorite are the Hyppo Cafe for gourmet popsicles and The Bunnery Bakery Cafe for breakfast and baked goods. 

Like most destinations in Florida, St. Augustine all has beautiful beaches. The aptly named St. Augustine Beach is perfect for burning off some energy after a long day of historic sightseeing.

Jekyll Island

A trip to Jekyll Island with a toddler promises a memorable and family-friendly escape. Located approximately 75 miles north of downtown Jacksonville in Georgia, the island is easily accessible for a day trip or a weekend getaway. This coastal gem provides an ideal setting for a day of exploration with little ones. With its pristine beaches, tidal creeks, and maritime forests, the park offers toddlers the chance to discover diverse ecosystems and engage in nature-centric activities. Families can embark on scenic hikes, explore tidal pools, or enjoy a leisurely picnic amidst the lush surroundings. Camping enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Little Talbot Island State Park offers camping facilities. Which allows families to extend their stay and immerse themselves in the serenity of the park overnight. The park’s picturesque beaches, especially the aptly named “Little Talbot Island Beach,” offer a perfect spot for families to build sandcastles, splash in the waves, and create lasting memories. 

Big Talbot Island State Park

Spanning over 2,500 acres, Big Talbot Island State Park provides ample space for outdoor exploration. This nature preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset and entry is a mere $3 per vehicle. The park boasts unique beaches and scenic trails, making it an ideal sport for a day trip with toddlers. The best beaches for families include the picturesque Blackrock Beach, known for its unique salt-and-pepper sands. We also love Boneyard Beach. Boneyard Beach, adorned with weathered skeletons of ancient oak and cedar trees, creates a surreal and mesmerizing landscape. Toddlers will love playing, exploring, and experiencing the wonders of nature. My kids spent hours climbing the driftwood, playing hide and seek around it, and splashing in the waves.

Big Talbot Island State Park also makes a great place for family photos! The driftwood is gorgeous. Book a family photo session at sunset for a beautiful backdrop.

Treaty Oak

Nestled in the heart of downtown Jacksonville in Jessie Ball duPont Park, the Treaty Oak is a magnificent Southern live oak tree that is centuries old. Big kids and adults will enjoy the traditional Top Golf experience, while toddlers will love the adjacent miniature golf course.  You can’t spend time in Florida without golfing!

Sweet Pete’s Candy

Indulge your family’s sweet tooth at Sweet Pete’s Candy, a whimsical candy factory set in a beautifully restored Victorian mansion in downtown Jacksonville.  Toddlers can marvel at the colorful displays, take part in candy-making classes, and, of course, enjoy delicious treats. Sweet Pete’s also features a charming rooftop garden and a playful Candy Apple Café, ideal spots to enjoy tasty treats! Kids Free November

In Jacksonville, the month of November brings an exciting and family-friendly initiative known as “Kids Free November,” creating a budget friendly opportunity for families to visit attractions, museums, and recreational venues. Kids get in free! While you should expect heightened attendance during Kids Free November, I didn’t find it beyond what I would normally expect from a popular zoo or children’s museum so don’t let that deter you from enjoying the free admission.
