Disney World Weather in March

March is a great time of year to visit Disney, in fact it might be the best time! We’ve visited Disney in the dead of summer (July), winter months (December, January), and for Halloween in October but our trips in March have been some of my favorite.

The average high temperature for March at Disney World is 78°F and the average low temperature is 58°F. There are usually only 3 rainy days during the month of March. But…let’s be real, Florida weather can be unpredictable and so can spring weather. You put those two things together and you need to be prepared for anything! Make sure you check the weather forecast before you leave for your trip and again each morning before you head to the park for the day.

You might be surprised to know that Disney World in March can be just as hot in the summer months. Our last trip we had 90 degree days in March! But we still had a great time!

What to Bring to Disney World for Families

Regardless of how old your kids are I recommend bringing a double stroller to serve as mobile storage. It is absolutely the easiest way to carry around extra layers, shoes, and snacks. All of my tips below assume you’ve got some extra storage space and you aren’t trying to carry everything in a backpack.

Pro tip: get a balloon from the grocery store to tie to your stroller so you can find it easily in a crowd. Just make sure its not a Disney themed balloon!

What to Wear to Disney World – For Any Month

Comfortable Walking Shoes

This one goes without saying but you are going to be doing a lot of walking. There is really no way around it. So you are going to want to wear very comfortable walking shoes, preferably ones you’ve worn before. A great option is water proof shoes from Vessi that are both comfortable and adorable but will also be perfect for any rain showers you experience while visiting Disney World in March.

Sunscreen and Sun Hat

Repeat after me: you should wear sunscreen everyday no matter where you live or what you are doing. But just in case you aren’t that diligent, make sure you bring sunscreen to Disney World. While most lines are covered you are going to be outside quite a bit and the Florida sun is really strong especially if you aren’t used to it!

While you won’t want to wear a hat on many of the rides, it’s a great thing to have if you can find an easily packable one.

First Aid Kit

Did you know Disney World has an urgent care? I do! Sadly. While we needed medical attention during our most recent visit, it would have been very helpful to have medicines on hand for the kids. I’d also recommend Band-Aids to treat any blisters that might pop up.

Snack Bag

Did you know you are allowed to bring food into Disney World? In addition to being a great way to save money, snacks are life when you have young kids. There are some guidelines and you can’t bring massive coolers in. We bring a soft sided cooler that can lay flat in our suitcase but will fit full lunches and hours of snacks. Then we freeze water bottles to use as ice packs and as they defrost we drink them!

Fanny Pack

Sorry, I’m not calling it a belt bag. These are 100% fanny packs and once you start wearing them for travel you will never look back. Our fanny packs have been to Disney World and abroad with us and have officially replaced by traditional hand bag. Having your hands and arms free while chasing young children around the Magic Kingdom is the only way to go!

Rain Jacket or Rain Poncho

Or both!! I strongly recommend bringing a rain jacket from home, it will be perfect for a light drizzle. However, if you deal with a heavy rain shower I find that a rain poncho actually works better because it will cover more of your legs too. While your unlikely to deal with the amount of rain that you would see during hurricane season, I would absolutely plan for some rain in March even if it isn’t on the forecast. Rain ponchos at Disney are expensive and not the best quality. I recommend bringing some with you or buying some from a grocery store before you head into Disney World.

Why else do you need a rain poncho? For the water rides of course! I recommend wearing a poncho on the rides plus flip flops or water shoes (see recommendations below). Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom was one of our favorite rides and of course you can’t miss Splash Mountain! But that doesn’t mean you want to spend the rest of the day dripping.

Rain Pants

No packing list on Pattons with Passports, let alone a what to wear to Disney World in March list, would be complete without rain pants. Rain pants are a great option for families who are up for adventuring in any weather. And if you think about how much you’ve spent on a trip to Disney World plus all of the logistics you’ve organized that is going to be most families. We slip rain pants on over some leggings, throw on our rain shoes, and top it off with a rain jacket and we are ready for anything Florida can throw at us!

Change of Clothes

A good idea anytime you are traveling with children and have a long day planned is to bring a change of clothes. Even with your storage double stroller you are probably going to be tight on space. If you aren’t staying at a Disney resort, I recommend leaving a change of clothes in the car because I view it as an absolute emergency outfit. Unless, of course, you have a recently potty trained young child in which case you should have extra underwear and long pants or shorts with you in the park. We’ve never had to change clothes during one of our Disney trips but I am also really mindful of what we wear onto water rides and what my kids eat while we are at Disney.

What to Wear To Disney World In March

March can be a different time of year to pack for no matter what your destination! You are going to need quite a few layers to put on/take off for a comfortable trip to Disney World in March. I recommend you pick a neutral color palette so that you can mix and match outfits easily.

Water Shoes

March in Florida is water ride season! You’ll see a lot of different strategies for staying dry on the water rides including taking your shoes off and hiding them under a poncho. That’s OK in a pinch but I would recommend bringing flip flops or water shoes for everyone in your family that you can change into and out of. These will also come in handy for rainy days too. Does that mean you should just plan on wearing water shoes or flip flops all day long? Absolutely not! That is a recipe for blisters!

Bathing Suit

Don’t forget your bathing suit! Even if you luck out and have what I consider to be perfect weather, i.e. cool sweater weather many of the resort pools near or on Disney property are heated. Meaning you can comfortably swim year around. I personally don’t recommend wearing your bathing suit to the theme parks, you won’t need it for the water rides if you are wearing a poncho. I prefer to save the water parks for the summer months.

Layers

The best answer to the question what to wear to Disney World in March? LAYERS! In addition to a rain jacket, I recommend you bring a few sweaters depending on how many days you’ll be at the theme parks. Zip ups are my favorite because they are easy to get on and off and you can tie theme around your waist when you aren’t wearing them. A light jacket would work as well if you rather have something wind resistant.

Pants, 3/4 Leggings, and Shorts: One of Each!

The hardest thing about visiting Disney World in March can be the wide temperature swings. One day may be 60, the next 80, and at night somewhere in between. The easiest way to plan for that is to bring one pair of pants for each type of weather. For that reason I recommend you have shorts, a capri pair of leggings or joggings, and a longer pair of pants.

I personally prefer breathable fabrics when walking miles each day so I opt for leggings over jeans, but everyone has their own personal preferences. Jeans definitely work this time of year but be aware that on sunny days with higher temperatures or humidity you are likely to get a little sweaty.. Same with denim shorts, I prefer to leave those at home in favor of bike shorts. One year I wore tennis skirts and those were perfect too.

Short Sleeve t-Shirts

I prefer to layer short sleeve t-shirts or tank tops under a sweatshirt rather than wear long sleeves. Less packing and while you will probably need an additional layer in the early morning or at night, a short sleeve t-shirt is most likely all you will need for most days.

Something really cute, especially if you are bringing you kids to the Magic Kingdom for the first time, is to get matching family shirts with their favorite Disney characters.
