Review of Sunriver Resort with Kids: An Easy Vacation
Traveling with kids is an adventure in itself. As moms, we’re often juggling multiple hats—planner, packer, snack distributor, peacekeeper—and when it comes to vacations, the mental load can be overwhelming. Where do you stay? How do you keep the kids entertained without scheduling every minute? Is it worth the money? That’s exactly why I want to share our experience visiting Sunriver Resort with kids. I booked at stay at Sunriver Resort at the last minute when I was completely burnt out from trip planning and am so glad I did!
Located in central Oregon, this family-friendly destination is one of the few luxury resorts that actually understands what parents need. It combines comfort and relaxation with a wide variety of onsite activities that keep children happy without requiring you to over-plan.
If you’re the kind of mom who loves the idea of a resort stay but needs reassurance that it will actually make life easier (and be worth the investment), then keep reading. I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know about Sunriver Resort with kids—where it is, the best times to go, family accommodations, top activities, dining options, and even a few downsides you should know before booking.
By the end of this post, you’ll see why Sunriver makes such a smart choice for families who want to travel well without adding stress.

Where is Sunriver Resort?
Sunriver Resort is a planned resort community located about 15 miles south of Bend, Oregon, nestled along the Deschutes River and at the base of the Cascade Mountains. From Portland, it’s about a 3.5-hour drive, and from Eugene, you’re looking at roughly 3 hours. If you’re flying in, Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) is the closest option—only about 35 minutes away.
The resort itself feels secluded, but you’re still close enough to Bend to make an easy day trip for shopping, dining, or exploring. That balance of being both tucked away and connected is part of what makes visiting Sunriver Resort with kids so appealing.

When to visit Sunriver Resort with Kids?
One of the best parts about Sunriver Resort with kids is that it’s a true four-season destination. Each time of year offers something special:
- Summer: Think biking, kayaking, swimming, and long sunny days. The average summer temps hover around the 70s and 80s, which is perfect for outdoor play without being miserably hot.
- Fall: The air turns crisp, the trees put on a show of golden colors, and crowds thin out. This is a cozy, lower-key time to visit. If your kids have a long weekend off of school in September and October then I highly recommend you use it to visit Sunriver Resort!
- Winter: Sunriver is only about 20 minutes from Mt. Bachelor, one of the best ski resorts in the Pacific Northwest. Families can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and return to hot cocoa by the fire at Sunriver Resort.
- Spring: Quieter and more budget-friendly, spring in Sunriver means blooming wildflowers, cool hikes, and plenty of space to explore. It also means rain and cool days so make sure you bring your outdoor gear and the right attitude!
Personally, I think summer and winter shine the most for families. In summer, there’s so much to do onsite that you rarely need to leave. In winter, the skiing and snow play make it magical for kids. But really, any season works for a family getaway at Sunriver Resort with kids. We like to go in summer but that is only because we can’t stand the cold, and are absolutely terrible and skiing and snowboarding!
Staying at Sunriver Resort with Kids
Let’s talk lodging. Because as moms, we know that where you sleep can make or break the entire trip. Coming from a woman who has had her share of sleepless nights in hotel rooms, I can promise you that you’ll get a good nights sleep at Sunriver!
Sunriver offers a wide range of accommodations, which is one of the main reasons I recommend it for families. You can choose what fits your group best, from traditional hotel-style rooms at the main lodge to spacious vacation rentals with multiple bedrooms and full kitchens.
- The Lodge Rooms & Suites: Perfect if you’re traveling light and just want a central, hotel-style experience. The lodge has cozy rooms and quick access to restaurants and amenities.
- Vacation Rentals & Condos: For families (especially with young kids), I think this is the way to go. These homes give you more space to spread out, private bedrooms for naptime, and a kitchen for easy meals. Many come with decks, fireplaces, and BBQs. Just be aware these are owned by individual owners so the decor and finishings may differ. You can check out full photos before booking to make sure the rental lives up to your expectations.
- Luxury Homes: If you’re traveling with extended family or want a splurge, Sunriver has stunning luxury homes with hot tubs, large living spaces, and forest views.
When we stayed at Sunriver Resort with kids, having a rental house was a game-changer. This is definitely my favorite way to vacation! We could prep breakfast before heading out for the day, the kids had separate sleeping spaces, and at night, we could relax by the fireplace without feeling cramped. Or if you are like me and you really can’t unplug, you’ll have separate space from sleeping kids to get a little work in after you’ve had a fun day relaxing with the family.
The best part? Because everything is within the resort community, you don’t feel isolated. You still have access to all the resort’s pools, activities, and restaurants while enjoying the comforts of a home. And there are so many kids around that yours are sure to make new friends while hanging out at the resort!

Top 10 Activities to Do at Sunriver
Here’s where Sunriver really shines. Unlike many destinations where you have to plan excursions and book activities ahead of time, Sunriver Resort with kids offers so much right onsite. You can wake up, see what everyone feels like doing, and easily fill the day.
Here are our top 10 favorite family activities:
- Biking Around the Trails – Sunriver has over 40 miles of paved bike trails that wind through forests, along rivers, and around meadows. You can rent bikes onsite (including trailers and tag-alongs for little ones). It’s safe, scenic, and a must-do.
- The Cove Aquatic Center – This is a family favorite. Picture indoor/outdoor pools, a lazy river, water slides, and plenty of lounge chairs for mom. It’s basically built for kids to burn off energy while parents relax. We didn’t run into this issue but I’ve seen complaints about having to queue to get into the aquatic center when it opens. Fair warning if you visit during peak season!
- Nature Center & Observatory – The Sunriver Nature Center offers hands-on learning about local wildlife, while the observatory is one of the best stargazing spots in Oregon. Kids love the telescopes and interactive exhibits.
- Kayaking & Paddleboarding on the Deschutes River – The river runs right through the resort, making it super easy to rent gear and explore. Even beginners can enjoy calm sections perfect for families.
- Horseback Riding – Sunriver Stables offers pony rides for little kids and trail rides for older ones. It’s a unique way to experience the landscape.
- Fort Funnigan Kids Club – This supervised program gives kids a chance to play games, do crafts, and explore, while parents sneak in a little alone time.
- Golf & Mini Golf – For families who love golf, Sunriver is known for its courses. For the rest of us, the family-friendly mini golf option is a fun alternative.
- Winter Snow Play – If you visit in winter, the resort offers sledding hills, ice skating, and shuttles to nearby skiing at Mt. Bachelor.
- Hiking & Wildlife Viewing – With trails right out your door, you don’t need to go far to spot deer, birds, and chipmunks. Easy hikes make it fun for younger kids too.
- Family Movie Nights & Events – Depending on the season, Sunriver hosts outdoor movie nights, concerts, and festivals. It adds that “something special” factor.
The beauty of Sunriver Resort with kids is that you never feel pressured to over-plan. The activities are all nearby, low-stress, and flexible. And there are so many free activities to do!

Top 5 Places to Eat at or Near Sunriver Resort with Kids
Food can be another source of stress on family vacations. Thankfully, Sunriver makes it easy. You’ll find a mix of casual family-friendly spots and nicer dining options when you’re craving something upscale.
Here are five favorite restaurants for families:
- The Lodge Kitchen – Located right at the main lodge, this is a convenient option with Northwest-inspired dishes. Breakfast here is especially good.
- Twisted River Tavern – A relaxed, pub-style atmosphere that welcomes kids. Burgers, sandwiches, and a good kids’ menu.
- Sunriver Brewing Company – Just outside the resort in the Village, this is a must for families. Great craft beer for parents, plus a kid-friendly menu and outdoor play area.
- Goody’s Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop – For a sweet treat, kids will love stopping here in the Village. Ice cream, fudge, and candy galore.
- Blondie’s Pizza – A no-fuss, family-approved dinner option. Order a pizza and take it back to your rental house after a busy day. This is our go-to after busy days of biking!
The convenience of having everything close means you don’t have to drag tired kids into the car just to find dinner. Another win for moms visiting Sunriver Resort with kids!

Why We Loved Sunriver Resort with Kids
There’s a lot to love about Sunriver Resort with kids, but here are the highlights that stood out to us:
- Ease of Planning: You don’t have to book endless activities ahead of time. Everything you need is already there.
- Family-Friendly Accommodations: The vacation rentals made traveling with kids less stressful. They are so nice and huge!
- Activities for Every Age: Whether you’ve got toddlers, teens, or both, Sunriver Resort has something for everyone.
- Safe & Walkable: The community is designed to be bike- and pedestrian-friendly, so you can let kids roam more freely.
- Year-Round Fun: Few resorts truly shine in all four seasons, but Sunriver does.
At the end of the day, what I loved most was how relaxing it felt. I didn’t feel like I was “working” on vacation to keep everyone happy. That alone makes Sunriver Resort with kids worth it!

The Drawbacks of Sunriver Resort with Kids
Of course, no resort is perfect. Here are a few cons to keep in mind:
- It Can Be Pricey: While there are budget-friendly rentals, the resort fees and dining options can add up quickly.
- Crowds in Peak Season: Summer is very popular, so expect pools and restaurants to be busy. Booking early helps. We didn’t have massive issues but I’ve seen photos of lines to get into the pools. Those lines would definitely ruin a good vacation!
- Limited Nightlife for Adults: If you’re hoping for an exciting evening scene once the kids are asleep, Sunriver isn’t that type of destination. It’s more about relaxation than nightlife.
These cons didn’t ruin our trip, but they’re worth knowing so you can set expectations.
Traveling with kids can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. A stay at Sunriver Resort with kids makes family travel feel effortless by combining luxury accommodations with endless onsite activities. Whether you’re biking through pine forests, floating in the lazy river, or stargazing at the observatory, you’ll find that everything is designed with families in mind.
For busy moms, the real value is in how easy it all feels. You don’t have to over-plan, you don’t have to leave the resort to keep kids entertained, and you can actually enjoy your time away.
Would we go back? Absolutely. In fact, I’m already dreaming about our next trip. If you’re looking for a destination that blends comfort, convenience, and fun for the whole family, you can’t go wrong with Sunriver Resort with kids.
