For families coming from out of state, Portland International Airport (PDX) is the best gateway. You can easily rent a car at the airport and be standing barefoot in the sand by lunchtime. Since we aren’t Oregon locals, we’ve done this more than a few times and I promise it’s a very easy commute from PDX to the coast! We’ve tons of good friends who like to go to the Oregon Coast for Spring Break in mid-March. For me the weather is too volatile, but if you are good last minute travelers or are OK riding out a few rainy days, you can enjoy shoulder season pricing and low crowds.

    Lunch: Sea Level Bakery + Coffee
    Before leaving town, grab sandwiches and coffee from Sea Level Bakery + Coffee. Their sourdough bread is incredible, and they have kid-friendly muffins and cookies for the road. I dream about this place for weeks after we leave Cannon Beach, their baked goods are that good!

    Afternoon: Hug Point Stop
    On your way back to Portland, take 20 minutes to stop at Hug Point State Recreation Site. This magical spot has sea caves, a small waterfall you can walk under, and tide pools. It’s an easy walk from the parking lot and feels like a hidden adventure to end your trip. This is one of my top 10 beaches on the Oregon Coast and it’s such an amazing hidden gem.

    Then it’s back in the car for the drive home, hopefully with sandy shoes, tired kids, and full hearts.
