1 Week in Yachats Oregon: The Ultimate Family Itinerary
When you’re a busy parent who has traveled extensively and experienced countless destinations, it takes a special place to make you pause, exhale, and feel truly present. Yachats, Oregon is one of those rare places. Known as the “Gem of the Oregon Coast,” this small, sophisticated town blends rugged coastal beauty, hidden gems, and warm community vibes with just enough luxury to keep discerning travelers comfortable.
We visited Yachats, Oregon for the first time a decade ago and I immediately fell in love. There is something just so magical about Yachats that truly sets it apart from other places on the Oregon Coast.
If you’ve been searching for a destination that balances adventure, family-friendly activities, fine dining, and relaxation, planning 1 week in Yachats Oregon might be the perfect choice. This blog post is your turnkey guide—designed for busy working parents who want every detail laid out. From when to visit, where to stay, and why Yachats is special, to a day-by-day itinerary with restaurants, activities, and hidden gems, this is the only guide you’ll need to Yachats.

Best Time of Year to Visit Yachats
One of the best things about Yachats is that it’s stunning in every season. But depending on your family’s style, some times of year will shine brighter:
- Summer (June–August): Expect long, golden days, perfect for tide pooling, beach play, and hiking. This is peak tourist season, so book lodging and dining reservations well in advance. And when I say well in advance, I mean a year in advance at least! While it might seem like Yachats is a sleepy town so you can book something spur of the moment, the opposite is true. There aren’t many hotel options so you want to book well in advance!
- Fall (September–October): A favorite for many locals and repeat visitors. The weather is still pleasant, with fewer crowds, and the sunsets are extraordinary. Families who want both relaxation and outdoor adventure will love fall. If you have flexibility with school schedules then fall is a great time to visit Yachats.
- Winter (November–February): Storm-watching season. Cozy up in a luxury oceanfront cottage while watching dramatic waves crash against black basalt rocks. It’s magical for families who don’t mind bundling up.
- Spring (March–May): Whale-watching season, with migrating gray whales passing by the coast. Expect a mix of sunshine and rain, but also stunning wildflowers and quieter beaches.
If your family is looking for balance, late summer through early fall is arguably the best time to spend 1 week in Yachats Oregon.

Where Is Yachats?
Yachats is a charming coastal town located on the central Oregon coast, about 160 miles southwest of Portland (a 3–3.5 hour drive). Nestled between Cape Perpetua and the Siuslaw National Forest, Yachats feels secluded yet accessible. You can easily fly into Portland and then make the drive out to Yachats all in one day.
It’s far less crowded than Cannon Beach or Lincoln City, but just as beautiful—if not more so. Its location also makes it a fantastic base for day trips up and down the coast.
Where to Stay in Yachats
When it comes to lodging, Overleaf Lodge & Spa sets the standard for families who want both comfort and luxury.
Overleaf Lodge & Spa (Recommended: Stay in a Cottage)
Located directly on the oceanfront, Overleaf Lodge offers stunning coastal views, an award-winning spa, and immediate access to the 804 Trail. But for families, the best choice is to book one of their spacious cottages. These are the perfect place to make your homebase for 1 week in Yachats!
- Why families love the cottages:
- Full kitchens and cozy living spaces make it easy to cook a meal or snack when dining out feels overwhelming.
- Private patios and ocean views for morning coffee or sunset wine (parents) and cocoa (kids).
- Access to the spa and lodge amenities while enjoying the privacy of a cottage.
Other Options (if cottages are fully booked):
- Fireside Motel: Budget-friendly with ocean views and direct beach access.
- Adobe Resort: Classic, family-friendly with an indoor pool.
For discerning families who want turnkey luxury with a homey feel, Overleaf’s cottages are unbeatable. We’ve stayed in two different cottages at the Overleaf and loved both of them. The homes are individually owned so the decor is different and reflects the owner’s style but we loved that. Homes also range in size, with some perfect for multiple families or multigenerational trips.

Why Spend 1 week in Yachats?
So why spend 1 week in Yachats Oregon when you could go anywhere in the world? Because Yachats offers something rare:
- Natural beauty that feels untouched. You’ll explore tide pools, hidden beaches, and basalt rock formations unlike anywhere else.

- Access: Park at the small parking lot at the trailhead on Ocean View Drive (room for about 10 cars). From there, walk down the paved path that connects to the 804 Trail. The tide pools are scattered along the basalt rocks, visible at low tide.
- What you’ll see: Sea stars, crabs, mussels, and bright green anemones clinging to the rocks. Waves crash dramatically against the black basalt, so keep kids close and watch footing.
- Afternoon: Relax at your cottage or take a short family bike ride around town.
- Dinner: Keep it casual with takeout pizza from Out of Gas Pizza, enjoyed back in your cottage.

Day 3: Hobbit Beach
- Breakfast: Grab breakfast at Green Salmon Coffee Company for a hearty, locally sourced start.
- Activity: Hobbit Beach
- Where: Just north of Heceta Head Lighthouse, about 15 minutes south of Yachats on Highway 101.

- Tide pools: On the north end of Hobbit Beach, at low tide, you’ll find rocks scattered with starfish, sea urchins, and barnacles. These tide pools are less crowded and feel more hidden than those near town.
- Why go?: We visited Hobbit Beach in peak summer season and only saw one other family for the ENTIRE DAY. This truly is a hidden gem and that is mind blowing. It is one of the prettiest beaches we’ve ever been to. The walk to the beach was even fantastic!
- Dinner: Dine at The Drift Inn, a quirky family-friendly restaurant with live music and a diverse menu.

Day 4: Strawberry Hill & Day Trip to Florence
