Family-friendly beaches: The coast is filled with gentle stretches of sand perfect for sandcastle building, kite flying, or tidepool exploring. The Oregon Coast was our first experience with tide pooling and while we’ve found tons of other places to check out marine creatures it is still the best!
Unique experiences: From riding ATVs on the Oregon Dunes to exploring historic lighthouses, your kids will never be bored.
Charming towns: Small coastal towns like Cannon Beach, Seaside, and Newport have that perfect mix of family-friendly attractions and local charm.

Best Time of Year to Visit the Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your family’s travel style:

Summer (June – August): Warmest temperatures (60s and 70s), perfect for long beach days and outdoor activities. It’s the most popular season, so expect more crowds.
Fall (September – October): Fewer crowds, beautiful sunsets, and still mild weather. A great time for families who prefer a quieter experience and have flexibility with school schedules.
Winter (November – February): Storm-watching season! Bundle up and enjoy dramatic waves, cozy coastal hotels, and whale watching.
Spring (March – May): Blooming wildflowers, baby seals on the beaches, and smaller crowds make spring a magical time to visit. Just be prepared for spring showers, its how you end up with wildflowers after all!

Exploring Tide Pools
At beaches like Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach or Yaquina Head near Newport, kids can get up close with starfish, crabs, and sea anemones. Just check the tide charts before you go! One of the coolest things we’ve ever done is walk around the tide pools at Seal Rock with a docent. You read that right, A DOCENT. The Oregon Coast takes it’s tidepools seriously and places docents on the beach to help little marine biologists make sense of what they are seeing. It is sucha magical experience!
Visiting the Oregon Coast Aquarium
Located in Newport, this aquarium is a family favorite. It’s interactive, educational, and the exhibits (like the walk-through shark tunnel) always wow the kids.
Riding Dune Buggies at the Oregon Dunes
For adventurous families, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is a must. You can rent dune buggies or ATVs and ride the rolling sand dunes—a thrill for older kids and teens.
Whale Watching
Gray whales migrate along the coast in winter and spring, and Depoe Bay is one of the best spots to see them. Boat tours are family-friendly and unforgettable.
Exploring Lighthouses

Cannon Beach: Famous for its iconic Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach is one of the most popular coastal towns. It has plenty of family-friendly hotels, restaurants, and wide sandy beaches perfect for playing.
Seaside: With a historic boardwalk, arcade, and plenty of ice cream shops, Seaside is basically a kid’s dream. It’s a great base for families who want lots of activities in one place.
Newport: Home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Newport offers a mix of nature and family attractions. The working fishing harbor is also fun to explore.
Florence: Near the Oregon Dunes, Florence is the place to stay if your family wants to try dune buggy rides or sandboarding.
Manzanita: A quieter alternative to Cannon Beach, Manzanita has a laid-back vibe and is perfect for families who prefer a slower pace. And it’s home to a 7-mile stretch of golden sand! We’ve really never seen a prettier stretch of sand.

Best Beaches to Visit with Kids

While the Oregon Coast has hundreds of miles of coastline, some beaches stand out as especially amazing! Is the Oregon Coast worth visiting? These beaches definitely are!

Cannon Beach: Wide, flat, and great for kite flying. Wondering is the Oregon Coast worth visiting? Seeing the Haystack Rock in person would make it worth it all on it’s own. I highly recommend making a little bonfire and enjoying s’mores and sunset while looking at Haystack Rock.
Seaside Beach: Perfect for sandcastles and near lots of kid-friendly activities.
Short Sand Beach (Oswald West State Park): A short hike leads to a hidden cove where kids can play in the sand while parents enjoy the scenery. Despite being a not so hidden secret on the internet, we were shocked to practically have Short Sand Beach to ourselves! The Oregon Coast just has that many amazing beaches that every can spread out!
Bandon Beach: Dramatic rock formations and tide pools make this beach especially fun to explore.
Oregon Dunes Beaches: Endless sand perfect for running, rolling, or ATV adventures. We keep it simple and tire our kids out with games of hide and seek in the dunes!

Hallmark Resort in Cannon Beach: Oceanfront rooms with amazing views of Haystack Rock. They even have pet-friendly options if you’re bringing the family dog. The Hallmark is one of the first hotels we ever stayed at on the Oregon Coast and still one of our favorites!
Surfsand Resort (Cannon Beach): Known for kid-friendly amenities, including s’mores kits for beach bonfires.
Inn at Spanish Head (Lincoln City): An oceanfront hotel with a heated pool, perfect for kids.
Driftwood Shores Resort (Florence): Just steps from the beach and close to the Oregon Dunes.
