Have You Always Loved Traveling?
Yes, I have always loved traveling. Some of my earliest memories are wondering what it would be like to visit the United States one day! When I was 16, I went to live in UK for a 1 year exchange program at a boarding school in Wales. While there, I was able to visit Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Germany and Turkey. After that, when I was 20 I went to live in Germany as an au pair and I traveled to Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Netherlands. Later, I returned to Europe with my husband and we checked Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and the Czech Republic off our bucket list. Right now, I’m planning our first trip to Europe as a family of four!
Why is travel important to your family?
For us, travel is important because it takes out of that busy work/school life and brings us together in another context. When we travel: we need each other, we spend more time with each other, we are forced to bond, understand, and forgive more. It’s too easy to get disconnected from each other in a busy week. When we are able to get out of our busy life we feel like we are filling each others cup. We are connecting in more meaningful ways than when we just stay at home.
How do you find time for travel?
I am very tired most of the time but planning trips and time to be outdoors is what brings me joy! Outdoors adventures help me to feel like I have work-life balance. I seriously do not know how I manage to do all we do but I guess it all comes down to prioritizing what is most important to you and your family.
Have you always been an avid hiker?
Before we moved to USA, both my husband and I were hiking enthusiasts, but we didn’t make time for it. When we moved to USA and found ourselves in the Pacific Northwest we realized we were finally in the place where we could bring that adventurer out. After we had the kids, we still wanted to explore. So we took them. We started them camping and hiking young to nurture their love for being outdoors in nature.
What advice can you give to families who want to be more outdoorsy but don’t know where to start?
I would say start small. Start by getting to your local park, a new trail in the neighborhood, or climb some trees in your backyard. Then at the next level, I would say you could start exploring the city parks. Then, expand to state parks and start growing your curiosity and comfort level.
Another great tip is to have the kids involved in the planning phase and also bring some of their friends along. It will make them look forward to adventures when they know their buddies are going to be part of the fun too.
You don’t need to go far to be outdoorsy. You just need to break that barrier of getting outside the comfort of your house! Do it even if it’s cold or the weather is not totally great. Being outside is so great for developing children.
What is one myth about camping or hiking with kids that you would like to disprove?
I think the biggest myth is that you need to have expensive gear and be an expert to hike. Anyone can be a hiker if they start small and then just build up from those small experiences and start adding to it. Add an extra mile, add some elevation. Then buy the hiking shoes if you feel like everyone is enjoying the activity.
Favorite Pacific Northwest travel destination and why?
It is so hard to choose a favorite! I have multiple favorites for different reasons or different time of the year. But if I were to choose only one, it would be Bend, Oregon. It has something for every season and so many fun activities for families. You can float the Deschutes River, hike and climb in Smith Rock State Park, explore lava caves, kayak/SUP in the Cascades lakes, visit waterfalls and hot springs, and head to Crater Lake. It is an adventure family’s dream destination!
What is one travel mistake you have made?
I’ve made a few! Make sure everyone is on the same page before you set off on your adventure. If you set unrealistic expectations, like a hike that is too long, you are setting your kids up for failure. Similarly, make sure you share your plans beforehand so you can have kids mentally prepare for the challenge you have planned.
